A number of substories in Yakuza require you to give vegetables such as The Mysterious Merchant, The Oblivious Woman, and The Boy Who Loves Veggies. These can be bought at the Greengrocers in Fushimi, but growing your own is much cheaper. Also some substories such as The Sexy Madam will only accept vegetables you have grown yourself.

The boat to Haruka’s house is on the westside of Fushimi, and you can farm by interacting with the hoe in the shed. Spreading fertilizer will make them grow more quickly, and you can unlock new vegetables you can grow by unlocking different ‘Green Thumb’ abilities in exchange for Virtue. You can also upgrade the size of your farm, and the number of plants you harvest for Virtue. There is a shrine in the garden you can use to do so.

Your house has a kitchen where you can cook food. This has a number of benefits and is required for The Love Starved Husband substory. Making meals increases your relationship with Haruka, and puts the meal in your inventory which can be used instead of medicine. This is a very cheap way to heal yourself.

Each recipe requires a number of ingredients that you can gain from your farm, or by fishing in Fushimi. Some fish are quite rare and if you have the money it might be worth buying them at the Fishmonger next to the Greengrocers. Cooking just a few of the easier meals like Pickles or Katameshi will help you out later on. Cooking ten meals also unlocks the substory The Warlord’s Ambition.

You can trade your meals and vegetables by interacting with the ledger in the corner of the house. This is one of the best ways to make money, as you can complete several trades at once, and you get a much higher price than you will at the pawn shop. The more trades you complete the more money you will get for each trade later on.

You have to pay off your debt 20 ryo at a time. After a number of trades you will receive a letter from the landlord that your payment is due. After you receive each letter you can go to Fushimi Shrine in order to pay him off. However, if you don’t have the money, you can leave it as long as you like, so don’t feel pressured to do so. Once you have paid off your debt you will get a special cutscene with Haruka, and you will get another one when you max out your friendship.

There are a number of cutscenes with Haruka that will help you max out her friendship. You will have to build up some friendship first, through doing trades, giving her kimonos, cooking meals, and talking to pets, before you can unlock them. The first cutscene happens when you sit by the fireplace, the second when you take a bath, and the third when you go to bed. If you don’t see the cutscene, try again when your relationship is a little higher.

There are six pets you can find and take home with you and interact with at the house. The first cat and dog you get will give you extra items every time you come to the house. However, you can interact with all the pets you collect. To unlock each pet you will need to complete their substory and then max out your relationship with them.

Here’s where to find each pet and what to do.

• The Lucky Cat
• Near the Wild Dancer Dojo in Rakunai
• The Lucky Cat wants money, and you have to come back several times in order to please him. You will need around 2 ryo in order to finish this bond, but they will give it back once you complete it.
• The Filthy Cat
• Next to the boat to the villa in Fushimi
• The Filthy Cat keeps falling in the river so take them to the bathhouse to clean them off. The last time they will be up on the main section of the dock.
• The Hungry Cat
• Down the road with red lanterns near the shortcut to Mukurogai
• As the name suggests you need to feed The Hungry Cat. They will only eat fish. The penultimate fish has to be a Sea Bream, and the last has to be a Bluefin Tuna. You can’t buy this one, and instead, you have to fish one up during Sea Fishing. They spawn in the day and you will need a good rod to hook it.
• The Barking Dog
• A side street near the Pawn Shop in Rakunai
• You need bones to keep The Barking Dog quiet, luckily they sell them at the Pawn Shop around the corner.
• The Injured Dog
• Near the Brawler for Hire in Mukurogai
• The Injured Dog needs medicine to bring it back to health.
• The Patient Dog
• Near the Satsuma Consulate in Fushimi
• The Patient Dog doesn’t move so you need to feed it. Any vegetables you grow in the garden are fine.
